Notes from the plant tag:

Features:  Lovely, glossy leaves, closely noded so the foliage always looks full, a good block out plant, flowering continuously in the warmer times of the year.  Well known for its hardwood properties, Xanthostemon verdugonianus is known as the hardest wood in the Philippines.

Conditions:  Full sunlight is preferable, however will withstand partial shading up to 4 hours a day.  Prefers well drained soil, can withstand medium drought conditions, once established.  Little pest management is required for this plant as it is a hardwood, which tends to deter termites.  Will grow to 3 m in height in ideal conditions of full sun and deep loam.  Will handle poor soils as well.

Flowers:  Lovely honeysuckle appearance, with brightly coloured cup-shaped flowers, several flowers to one stem. The flowers have several stamens and anthers.

Planting ideas:  Because of the bushiness of Shrub Penda, it lends itself to hedging, is a great bird attractant and the nectar will keep the birds returning most of the year.  Great as a specimen plant, medium shrub to a small tree.  Pink Penda may be pruned from time to time to keep compact.  Fertilise in summer/warmer months.
