Protea cynaroides

DESCRIPTION:  Grown for its spectacular flowerheads, the King Protea is an evergreen, woody shrub which produces large flowerheads with centres of white, fluffy flowers surrounded by colourful pink bracts.

USES:  Grown commercially for its flowers, the King Protea is a valuable screening, windbreak or specimen plant.

POSITION:  Grows best in acid, humus rich soils in full sun.  Tolerates poor, dry soils.

CARE:  Avoid high phosphorus fertilisers.  Apply mulch to suppress weeds and to avoid cultivation around the root zones.

PLANTING:  Cultivate soil before planting.  Dig hole twice the width of the container.  Remove plant from container and place into the hole so the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground.  Fill hole firmly and water in well even if the soil is moist.
