A hardy, attractive Australian native clumping plant featuring lush, bright green, strap-like leaves that arch gracefully to form a dense, fountain-shaped mound. During spring and summer, delicate sprays of small, fragrant, creamy-yellow flowers emerge amongst and above the foliage, adding seasonal interest and attracting beneficial insects.

An excellent choice for subtropical gardens, rainforest plantings, creek banks, pond surrounds, drainage areas and mass planting. Particularly valuable for stabilising slopes and controlling erosion, its dense root system helps bind soil while the evergreen foliage provides year-round texture and greenery.

Unlike many other Lomandras, Creek Mat Rush thrives in moist conditions and tolerates periodically waterlogged soils, making it especially useful for damp or poorly drained areas. Performs well in full sun through to heavy shade and is ideally suited to Brisbane's warm, humid climate. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods, although it performs best with reliable moisture. Requires minimal maintenance, with occasional removal of old foliage to maintain a tidy appearance.

Brisbane growing note: Lomandra hystrix is particularly useful for difficult, damp garden positions where many other Lomandras struggle. However, its flower clusters can have sharp bracts, so it is best planted away from narrow paths and areas where people frequently brush against the foliage.
